June 24th – The Day’s Most Fascinating News

Britain is just not that into EU, Markets Sink, the Cost of Kids, and Your Weekend What To Do List...

The British are leaving! The British are leaving! In a vote everyone expected to be close, but most thought would maintain the status quo, 52% of U.K. voters checked the ‘leave’ box and Eurotrashed the EU. Markets are reacting on the downside, and “the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985.” Here’s a backgrounder on what just happened and here are the latest updates from the BBC. Europe thought England would love it forever. But it turns out she’s just not that into EU.

Bangers and Cash

One London investment trader summed up the financial concern: “The risk is that this will trigger a U.K. recession and that will in turn cause a European and global recession.”

+ Felix Salmon: With a single vote, England just screwed us all.

+ “Managing the aftermath, which saw the country split by age, class and geography, will need political dexterity in the short run; in the long run it may require a redrawing of traditional political battle-lines and even subnational boundaries.” The Economist: A tragic split. (And suddenly there’s a lot more pressure on Game of Thrones to impress us with a finale that’s more extreme than real life.)

+ Wait, now the British are Googling for the meaning of the EU?

Weekend What Tos

What to Read: From David Sheinin in WaPo: How Katie Ledecky became better at swimming than anyone is at anything. (No pressure, Katie.) Plus, Michael Phelps’ Final Turn.

+ What to Stream: Forget soccer. The biggest thing out of Iceland these days is a band call Kaleo. You’re gonna listen to their debut album. Then see them on tour. Then realize you’ll never be able to see them in a small theater again and think to yourself, “Damn, that Dave was right again.” You can start with their hit, Way Down We Go, check out a studio performance of I Can’t Go on Without You, and catch them on KEXP.

+ What to Doc: Chef’s Table on Netflix. Start with the Grant Achatz episode. And you don’t need to be into cooking shows. Trust me.

+ What to Book: You didn’t think you needed a TV version of Fargo, but Noah Hawley proved you wrong in a very big way. And his latest book will also provide much pleasure. Get Before the Fall now, and thank me later.

+ What to Steal: Courtesy of Chris Messina (of hashtag creation fame), this is my laptop desktop pattern for pride weekend in SF.

+ What to Wear: There are only a few hours left to score your NextDraft Internet Superhero T-Shirt. It’s impossible not to get laid wearing one of these.

Everybody Must Get Stonewalled

From Newshour: “President Barack Obama created the first national monument to gay rights on Friday, designating the iconic Stonewall Inn in Manhattan where the modern gay rights movement took root nearly five decades ago.”

5

Kid ‘n Pay

Some products have actually gone down in price over the years, but raising a kid is still more expensive than ever. “Fixed costs like health care have increased. We also spend significantly more on child care and education.” (In-app purchases is where they really get you.) From the WSJ: How Much Does It Cost to Raise a Child?

6

Homecoming Request

“We are four families bonded together by tragedy and terror. We will never fully recover from the horrific outcome of our own hostage crises. But there is something that still can be done: Bring Austin Tice safely home.” From McClatchy: 4 hostage families make a plea: Bring home Austin Tice.

7

Let’s Get Big

As gas prices go down, demand for larger cars goes up. From the NYT’s Matt Richtel: American Drivers Regain Appetite for Gas Guzzlers. “So far this year, nearly 75 percent of the people who have traded in a hybrid or electric car to a dealer have replaced it with an all-gas car, an 18 percent jump from 2015.” (We need bigger cars because we’re all Uber drivers now…)

8

Frank and Beancounters

“Now, we’re becoming ‘that family’ — the spoiled brats arguing in public about who deserves what.” The LA Times on the fight that’s tearing apart a musical legacy: It’s brother and sister against brother and sister in bitter fight over control of Frank Zappa’s work. (This is exactly why I’ve decided to bypass my kids and leave all my headline puns to charity.)

9

Does Your Dog Byte?

“When Loni Edwards graduated from Harvard Law School, she never imagined her career would involve running a talent agency for Internet-famous pets.” FastCo takes you into the weird and wonderful world of Instagram pet influencers.

+ I’m pretty sure my wife’s photo of one of our new dogs already won this game.

Bottom of the News

Applicant must: “Maintain our Twitter and Facebook pages, sending out topical, informative, and engaging posts that tell our brand story in a creative, conceptual way. And change the Lord Commander’s bed sheets and dump out his filth bucket.” From Chris Brotzman in McSweeney’s: Social media intern wanted at the Night’s Watch.

+ The Power Within … the ER: Motivational speaker Tony Robbins’ coal walk burns more than 30.

+ And performance artist Milo Moiré has attracted a lot of attention after inviting “strangers in Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, and London to reach into a reflective box and caress her breasts or vagina for 30 seconds.” I still can’t figure out if this art is pro- or anti-Brexit.
