In Moby Dick, Herman Melville wrote, “Two thirds of this terraqueous globe are the Nantucketer’s. For the sea is his; he owns it, as Emperors own empires.” These days, emperors own Nantucket, too. As you can tell by the number of visitors, Nantucket is unique in many ways, but it’s also representative of an increasingly common storyline. The ever-expanding economic divide has made some places so expensive that people like teachers, police officers, firefighters can’t afford to live there.
